Phenotype and Measurement Conference
A major impediment to these efforts is the continuing concern that BPD, as currently defined, lacks demonstrated validity. To address this concern conference participants prepared brief (3-5 page) position papers that 1) identified core features of borderline personality disorder, 2) specified the relevant existing measures and their ability to describe adequately the particular phenomena of concern, 3) set forth the standards that the(se) borderline phenotype(s) should meet to be accepted as valid for study in his/her discipline, 4) assessed the extent to which the(se) phenotype(s) at present meet these standards, and 5) provided specific recommendations for research to address current deficiencies.
